Coimbatore, known for its thriving industrial sector, employs a significant number of migrant workers from North India, particularly in the construction and manufacturing industries.
Recently, a representative meeting of these workers was held at the Construction Workers’ Union office in Pappanaickenpalayam, where several resolutions were passed concerning their welfare and working conditions.
Key Demands of North Indian Workers
1. Minimum Wage Compliance
North Indian workers engaged in construction and other sectors in Coimbatore demand that the Tamil Nadu government ensure they receive the legally mandated minimum wages. Employers must comply with the state’s wage regulations to prevent exploitation.
2. Affordable Accommodation
Many migrant workers struggle with housing issues. The representatives urged the district administration to build dedicated hostels or accommodation facilities for North Indian workers to ensure safe and affordable living conditions.
3. Worker Registration & ID Cards
To streamline employment and improve security, the workers proposed setting up a Migrant Worker Registration Office at Coimbatore Railway Station. This office, managed jointly by the labor department and police, would:
- Register incoming workers
- Issue identity cards on the spot
Why Does This Matter?
Coimbatore’s industries rely heavily on migrant labor, and addressing these concerns can lead to:
✔ Better workforce stability
✔ Reduced attrition
✔ Improved compliance with labor laws
✔ A more secure environment for both workers and employers
Implementing these measures can enhance worker satisfaction, ensure fair employment practices, and support Coimbatore’s industrial growth.
